Arfa Karim Honored with LADIESFUND® Khushhalibank Idol Award

Late Arfa Karim Randhawa, the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional from Pakistan, was honored with LADIESFUND® Khushh­alibank Idol Award in 4th Ladies Fund Awards 2012 ceremony held at Mohatta Palace Karachi.

Speaking on this occasion, Ghalib Nishtar, President Khushhalibank said that Khushhalibank was privileged to sponsor the LADIESFUND® KHUSHALLIBANK Idol Award as a tribute to the women of Pakistan. “This year’s award is dedicated to Arfa Karim, who sadly left us earlier this year. Arfa Karim is and will continue to be an inspiration for the coming generations of Pakistan. This Award is an acknowledgement of her courage and commitment in pursuit of excellence and endeavor to create a positive image of Pakistan. Overall, the sponsorship of this award is our humble contribution to acknowledge and celebrate the top female role models of the country, particularly those women who are determined to succeed against all odds”.

LADIESFUND Awards are given each year to those Pakistani women who perform outstandingly in their respective fields. Arfa Karim, was one of the many talented individuals honored at the grand award ceremony. It was the unanimous decision of the judges’ panel to posthumously dedicate the LADIESFUND Khushhalibank Idol award in her memory. The parents of late Arfa Karim received her posthumous award in the ceremony.

HBL Staff Create Guinness World Records

 Employees of HBL created two Guinness world records at their annual sales conference.

The records  created at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, UAE . include the World.s Longest Handshake Chain of 274 people beating the previous record of 188, and the World.s Longest Graffiti Scroll themed upon .Colors of Pakistan.. Using spray paint only, HBL employees created a colorful scroll of 1,924 meters beating a previous record of 1,676 meters.

The final measurement is 1,924 metres. announced Tarika Vara, the adjudicator from Guinness as HBL employees broke into chants of .Pakistan Zindabad.. .This is a very difficult record to achieve,. she added.

Mr. R. Zakir Mahmood, President & CEO of HBL, received the Guinness certificates for both records at the Bank.s conference dinner on Saturday evening. Lauding the staff.s effort, the HBL Chief displayed the certificates and said, .This is for Pakistan!

UBL Omni Wins GSMA Global Mobile Award 2012

UBL’s branchless banking solution, Omni, has won GSMA Global Mobile award for 2012 for the category ”Best Use of Mobile in Emergency or Humanitarian Situations” beating three other services – contesting in the same category.
Other contestants included:
  • Flowminder.org for Rapid Population Movement Analysis using Cellphone Data for Improving Efficiency of Humanitarian Relief
  • MoreMagic and Voilà for T-Cash following the Haitian earthquake
  • NTT DOCOMO for  Recovery from Great East Japan Earthquake and New Disaster Preparedness Measures
  • Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) for the Strengthening Disaster Preparedness of Southern Leyte through SMS technology
UBL Omni won the award for for a transparent and efficient Cash Disbursement service after the 2009 IDPs Crisis and the 2010 Flood Crisis.
Omni happens to be one of the largest Branchless Banking cash disbursement initiatives to date and has proved to be a quick and transparent mechanism for the way cash disbursements are made by the Government of Pakistan and non-profit organizations.
UBL Omni provided the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), a poverty alleviation initiative by the Government of Pakistan, and the World Food Programme (WFP) with a transparent and convenient cash disbursement mechanism for victims of the 2009 ‘War Against Terror’ IDPs Crisis and the 2010 Flood Crisis. Beneficiaries were issued unique cards and PINs which were used to withdraw funds from conveniently located UBL Omni retail shops, where agents logged into their mobile based applications to execute quick cash disbursements.
Judges commented over Omni saying:
“There is growing interest in how to direct payment of aid to the needy and this scheme utilizing mobile phones is a valuable initiative.”
The GSM Association Awards are considered as the most prestigious contest and mostly called as Oscar for the mobile phone and telecommunication industry.
